What it means

Liability shifted to the merchant for a counterfeit or lost/stolen chip card transaction processed without proper chip acceptance.

Common causes

• Chip card processed via magstripe at EMV-capable terminal
• Fallback transaction when chip should have been used
• Counterfeit chip card at non-compliant terminal
